Information of Palmitic acid from BacMet

Compound Information

  • Compound name: Palmitic acid

  • Chemical Class: Free Fatty Acids

  • Description: Generic name is hexadecanoic acid. Alkali metal and ammonium salts of fatty acids are used as adjuvants for acidic biocides and as stand-alone biocides, in particular herbicides. Free fatty acids (FFAs) are known to have bacteriocidal activity and are important components of the innate immune system. The antibacterial properties of FFAs are used by many organisms to defend against parasitic or pathogenic bacteria. The antibacterial activity of each FFA is influenced by its structure and shape. Palmitic acid is mainly used to produce soaps, cosmetics, and release agents. These applications utilize sodium palmitate, which is commonly obtained by saponification of palm oil.
